Andreas Gysin, also known as ertdfgcvb is a Swiss-born generative artist, designer and coder. He creates artworks with endless energy where layers of colour continuously flow over one another. In many of his works, these layers are often constructed entirely of ASCII text, making the imagees even more remarkable. Andreas has also created a number of installations using custom hardware, highlighting his talent for using minimalist typography to marry to worlds of physical and digital art together.
COLLECTION HIGHLIGHTS
We present 3 of our favourite works by Andreas. Please note that these are very large animated gifs and will take some time to load, even on a fast internet connection. Also note that even so they are a low-resolution, short-length snapshot of the full generative pieces. Head over to the gallery at the bottom of this article to see these works in their full majesty.
"Towers" is one of Andreas's best known works. Each tower is built from a series of ASCII rings, each ring rotating within itself as the entire tower proceeds vertically through the screen, mimicking a screw thread or gear. On the face of it, the subject matter might not be considered a good topic for an artwork, but Towers brings an energy and beauty that is simply enthralling to watch.
"Device" is another piece which bristles with movement. Layers of characters flow over each other in seemingly random ways, yet ever so often coherent shapes and patterns emerge. You can spend hours just waiting for that perfect pattern or colour combination to appear - believe me, we know!
Finally "POST I" is an early work from Andreas which focuses on choreography and transition, exploring how pieces dance around each other and come together to form less chaotic structures, albeit only fleetingly.
Please load up the full gallery below to experience these works in their full resolution and length - given the complexity the gallery may take a while to fully load but we assure you it'll be worth the wait!
